| Description: |
The Board of Review is authorized to hear citizen challenges to the value placed on their property by the City Assessors' office. The Board has the power to revise property value if they determine, by reviewing evidence presented at a meeting, that it is warranted.
A property owner may appear before the Board to present his/her case as to why they feel their property is being over-valued by the Assessor. As property values are based on comparative sales of similar properties, the Board will expect that the citizen provide such documentation to support their opinion.
The Assessor will also present evidence to the Board supporting the property value.
After reviewing the evidence provided by both the citizen and the Assessor, the Board will determine whether to support the valuation or require adjustment of the property value.
The Board is considered to be a quasi-judicial body because it acts somewhat like a court, as it follows accepted procedures and evaluates the relevant facts in each case that is heard at the public meeting.
The Board of Review is made up of five members and one or more alternate members appointed by the Mayor for five-year terms. |
