ROAD MAINTENANCE 2003 – LINCOLN AVE. – Fiberglass Reinforced Bituminous Pavement Overlay GO TO THE STORY In an effort to extend the life expectancy of the proposed 2003 Bituminous Pavement Overlay on Lincoln Ave. from a few hundred feet west of 179th Street to Springdale Road, several engineering concepts were used. Investigations of the proposed project showed extensive Frost Related Deterioration from November of 2002 to February of 2003.The "alligatoring",or random pavement cracking , due to frost went from 25% noticeable to 98% from November 2002 to February 2003. Since the project crossed 5 areas of muck or peat, soil borings were performed by a Soils Engineering Consultant to show what was under the existing pavement and how thick the pavement in place to be. In conjunction with this The New Berlin Streets Utility was asked by The Engineering Division to install 29 cross drains at pavement low areas to help drain the aggregate base under the existing bituminous surface. This consisted of 2 foot wide trenches, 3 to 4 feet deep, that were excavated and then backfilled with coarse, gap-graded 2-3" stone. This was to correct the expected future frost action. Instead of just overlaying the existing pavement as is normally done, a fiberglass reinforced bituminous pavement overlay was specified using GLASGRIDas the fiberglass reinforcement. | |
